Question of the Day, August 5th 2011: Why is iftar attendance so low?

Iftar yesterday was noticeably much smaller in attendance than in years past. The Big Room wasn’t even needed to accommodate people. Does iftar usually start off that slow in attendance? If not, why do you think so many people aren’t coming?

  1. Sometimes attendance picks up as the month progresses. Sometimes people have other plans too. After 9 – 11 attendance was low. Since that time, every year is different. As though we hit peaks and plunge to valleys in attendance. The ’80’s – 90’s attendance was very high, w/some iftars overflowing with people. I am not sure if we will see that kind of overflow of attendance again. Times have changed, people move away from ICT (Arizona) or are less involved for various reasons and fewer new comers are moving to southern Arizona.

Low attendance should not stop anyone from attending though. There is something special about sharing iftar with others from the community. We share our fasting stories for the day, or week, have time to catch up on each others lives for a few minutes while eating, then joining in taraweeh is the bonus of the evening.
